The Dangers of Choosing “Low Cost” LASIK Surgery

New York, NY, August 06, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Now that the general public accepts that LASIK vision correction surgery has a very low risk of complications, a number of commercials and print advertisements offer “low cost” LASIK surgery. However, getting a discounted rate on eye surgery often means inexperienced doctors and equipment that is at least 10 years old.

Dr. Ilan Cohen, director of 5th Avenue Eye Center in Manhattan, serves patients throughout New York and New Jersey with his state-of-the-art LASIK and cataract surgical techniques. He hopes to educate people throughout the world about the importance of choosing a qualified doctor for LASIK surgery.

“There are many great doctors offering LASIK for reasonable prices,” Dr. Cohen said. “I serve a small part of the population and want to encourage people living in other areas such as California or Texas to thoroughly check the qualifications of a doctor before signing up for LASIK.”

Ideally, a doctor performing LASIK should offer other services and be a fellowship trained corneal specialist. Modern laser equipment is expensive and involves “click fees” (royalties paid to the excimer laser manufacturer), so surgeons who use older equipment can charge very low treatment prices.

“Older laser equipment might work fine for your eyes, but the risk that it might not fully correct your vision or even damage your eyesight is too high,” Dr. Cohen said. “There is really no ‘cheap’ substitute for modern equipment, an experienced and moral surgeon, and trained staff members.”

5th Avenue Eye Center is a comprehensive vision clinic with branches in Manhattan and Queens, New York as well as New Jersey. Dr. Cohen was fellowship trained in corneal surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. and Catholic Medical Center in Boston, Mass. His state-of-the-art LASIK techniques and ability to correct other surgeons’ mistakes have garnered international media attention on CBS, CNBC, and FOX News. Dr. Cohen teaches LASIK surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

The advent of patient financing programs has made high-quality vision correction technology accessible to almost everyone, notes Dr. Cohen. Many reputable LASIK clinics offer in-house financing or connections to medical loans and credit cards. Some medical lenders can even work with people who have a history of credit problems.

“With so many financing options out there, I encourage people to research their local LASIK clinics and find the most experienced surgeon with the best possible technology,” Dr. Cohen said. “Your eyes are worth paying slightly more money for the very best care.”

Abbott's iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser Technology gets US FDA nod to use in cataract surgery

The US Food and Drug Administration has cleared to use Abbott's iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser to create bow-shaped or curved arcuate incisions in corneal surgery, including cataract surgery.

The iFS Laser is currently used to create LASIK flaps and other corneal incisions in the eye and is the fifth generation of IntraLase technology, which has been used in more than 5 million procedures worldwide.

Nearly 3 million patients undergo cataract surgery each year in the United States. With this new clearance, the iFS Laser now gives surgeons the ability to make precise, bladeless arcuate incisions during surgery and customize the incision for each individual patient.

Factors such as placement, length, depth and radius of curvature can influence the surgeon's desired change to the cornea. These parameters can be difficult to control through traditional incisions made by hand using surgical knives. Now, using the iFS Laser, arcuate incisions can be performed with greater precision, predictability and customization than is possible with a manual technique.

"This is a major advancement and expansion of our Femtosecond laser technology," said Jim Mazzo, senior vice president, Abbott Medical Optics. "Abbott has been a pioneer in the ophthalmic use of Femtosecond lasers, and this new use of our technology demonstrates our leadership position in this very dynamic and competitive market. This is an important step as we look to utilize Femtosecond laser technology as a potential standard of care during the cataract procedure.”

Study data support that the iFS Femtosecond laser creates arcuate incisions safely and effectively as prescribed by the physician, and complies with applicable safety standards.

This new use of Abbott's iFS Femtosecond laser is available now in the United States.

Abbott Medical Optics is focused on delivering life-improving vision technologies to people of all ages. The company offers a comprehensive portfolio of cataract, refractive and eye care products. Products in the cataract line include monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs), phacoemulsification systems, viscoelastics, and related products used in ocular surgery. Products in the refractive line include wavefront diagnostic devices, femtosecond lasers and associated patient interface devices; excimer laser vision correction systems and treatment cards. Products in the eye care line include disinfecting solutions, enzymatic cleaners, lens rewetting drops and artificial tears.

Abbott is a global, broad-based health care company devoted to the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of pharmaceuticals and medical products, including nutritionals, devices and diagnostics.

Meet your merchant: Spivack Western Slope LASIK Center

Historically, patients had to drive to Denver for their laser vision correction surgery. This caused inconvenience, missed work and increased expense. The need for a local LASIK clinic was the No. 1 requested service improvement, and we listened. As a result, we invited a highly qualified, world-class surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Spivack, to Glenwood Springs.

We also built an operating room right here inside the office of 20/20 EyeCare to house our permanent laser equipment. To the patient, this means that our laser does not travel. Our laser remains in the operating room and is calibrated to this altitude, elevation, humidity and temperature.

Combining the best equipment with tremendous surgical skill has created outcomes not previously obtained, and we are proud of the results we have seen.

Just ask one of our happy patients. Creating the perfect environment for both the patient and equipment was not an easy or inexpensive task, but the results have been phenomenal, and our extremely satisfied patients are always willing to share with you their experience.

What do you sell?

We sell freedom. By that we mean freedom from dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The technology used at Spivack Western Slope LASIK Center is the most advanced in the industry and affords those people with blurry vision the ability to see again. During the 20-minute procedure, the front surface of the eye is reshaped by laser so that clear distance vision is restored.

With LASIK surgery, most patients are corrected so that they no longer require glasses for driving or watching television. Those of you with poor eyesight can truly understand what a blessing this is.

Spivack Western Slope Laser Center only uses the most advanced laser technology. The equipment used here is the only technology approved by NASA and the U.S. Military for their astronauts and fighter pilots. Dr. Spivack performs LASIK surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

We offer a free, personalized LASIK consultation to determine if laser vision correction surgery would be a valuable option for you and your lifestyle. Even if you've been told your prescription doesn't qualify, please call us and ask. With technology in this field advancing, there's a good possibility that you, too, could now qualify for laser vision correction surgery.

What makes having a good surgeon so important?

Dr. Lawrence Spivack is ranked in the top 1 percent of all refractive surgeons in the United States. He has performed more than 50,000 laser vision correction procedures since he first began in 1984. Dr. Spivack is a nationally trained, certified trainer for the VISX laser system.

This means that he trains other surgeons on the use and technique of the laser system that he uses in both his Denver center and in Glenwood Springs.

He is the caliber of surgeon that is called upon to be an expert witness in the field of refractive eye surgery and is frequently asked to consult for other doctors who have complicated surgical cases.

The benefit of this for our patients is that they truly have an expert surgeon performing the entire surgery, from start to finish, and can rest assured that they are in very capable hands.

What is your strategy for growth next year?

We are pleased to be blessed with very happy patients who graciously spread the word about their surgery with their friends and colleagues. This word of mouth advertising has proven to be our greatest source of referrals.

Additionally, other eye surgeons and optometrists from all over the Western Slope play a large role in our referral program. This brings wonderful patients to us from Delta, Montrose and Grand Junction as well as from Aspen to Vail.

We are fortunate to have such a competent and professional staff, a world-class surgeon, attentive co-managing doctors, and state-of-the-art equipment that steady growth comes naturally.

Our main objective is to always take exceptional care of each patient to ensure their safety and satisfaction. Doing so prevents the need for aggressive sales tactics and pricing schemes. For the services we provide, we maintain fair prices and a good value.

What is the best thing about running a business here?

Without a doubt, the wonderful people living in this beautiful valley are what make this the perfect place to run a laser vision correction surgery center. Here, we have a pool of potential patients who enjoy the outdoors, are healthy and are active.

Whether a patient's vision needs include skiing, hiking and biking our magnificent trails, or taking photos of our beautiful scenery, seeing clearly makes all the difference when there are so important things to see.

Being able to offer this life-altering surgery so close to home has given us a sense of accomplishment and pride.

As locals ourselves, seeing our satisfied patients out in the community and witnessing the improvement in their quality of life makes this an even more enjoyable place to do business.

What positive lessons did you learn during the recession?

Regardless of economic times, we understand that vision is one of our most precious resources. Whether your bank account is healthy or not, the desire to look and feel good can always be afforded when you know you are getting a great service for a good value.

Another consideration is that you may actually save money over your lifetime by no longer purchasing contact lenses or expensive glasses.

Payment for surgery can also seem less intense by taking advantage of our free consultation and coordinating payment through your Flexible Spending Account, Health Savings Account or our flexible financing options.

By continuing to offer the safest surgical options and maintaining only the highest standard of care, we offer our patients laser vision correction for a good value, at a convenient location.

It is possible to find surgery advertised for a lower price. There is always a reason for a lower price, and this could be a sacrifice in safety, expertise and even results in order to save money.

Spivack Western Slope LASIK Center only offers the safest, most accurate and professional care possible at an affordable price. We believe that there is only one way to do surgery, and that is the right way.

You can probably describe several ways to spend the cost of a cup of coffee a day, but what better way than to correct your vision, your most precious of the five senses.

Vision Expert and Celebrity Surgeon, Rajesh Khanna, Caters to Patients with Fears and Phobias About LASIK Eye Procedures

LASIK expert Dr. Rajesh Khanna M.D. offers his advice and expertise to those in need of vision correction. The Khanna Institute educates readers on advanced eye procedures and how to solve fluctuating vision.

Beverly Hills, Ca (PRWEB) March 29, 2012

Phobias and fears prevent many people from seeking LASIK surgery and experiencing the clarity of vision they deserve. Internationally acclaimed LASIK expert and owner of the Khanna Institute of LASIK and Refractive Surgery, Dr. Rajesh Khanna, believes gaining superior eyesight should be painless and caters to those with anxiety and fear. He’s improved the vision of some of the most well-known celebrities, athletes and musicians in the world.

“Are you afraid of someone touching your eyes?” asked Khanna. “Has fear kept you in the bondage of irritating contact lenses or those of archaic glasses? You are not alone. Fear of LASIK eye surgery has prevented a whole generation from enjoying the visual liberty they deserve.”

Khanna understands the fear and misgivings of patients and utilizes numbing eye drops, local blocks, state-of-the-art technology and the establishment of a comfort zone to insure patients are calm, comfortable and pain free. A leader and pioneer in LASIK procedures, Khanna is recognized as one of the preeminent vision care specialists in the world and is responsible for developing many of the tools and techniques that have become industry standards.

Khanna provides clients with a variety of vision services, customized to meet their individual needs. LASIK surgery with Wavefront technology provides clients with an unsurpassed level of accuracy to help them achieve 20/20 vision or better. For eye conditions that don’t lend themselves to LASIK surgery, blade and flap free SuperLASIK procedures are offered.

Those above 50 years of age with myopia and hyperopia can choose refractive lens exchange surgery, a non-laser procedure that utilizes ReSTOR lenses and eliminates the need for future cataract surgery. Patients who already suffer with cataracts have access to Crystalens HD technology that enhances visual function and reduces dependency on eyeglasses. Clients who aren’t good candidates for LASIK surgery and want to loose the reading glasses can select a PRELEX procedure to prevent cataracts and enhance vision.

Voted Best LASIK Surgeon in 2009 by the Los Angeles Daily News, he also received the Ventura County Star’s Reader Choice Award four years in a row. Featured in showcase Newsweek in Oct. 2011, Khanna maintains an informative blog and offers website visitors an online LASIK self-evaluation.

The Khanna Institute maintains two locations in California for patient convenience. One is located at 240 S. La Cienega Blvd., #250 in Beverly Hills and the second is at 179 Auburn Court #1 in Westlake Village.

Bright, modern facilities, innovative technology and Khanna’s expertise as a world-class LASIK vision specialist puts patients at ease and insures a pain-free experience. Older eyes on Lasik

lasik surgery

Tired of wearing glasses or contacts to help them see clearly, more and more people are turning to laser vision correction for a more permanent fix. For patients middle aged and older in particular, the surgery is becoming increasingly popular.

“It’s definitely been a trend,” said Dr. Vincent Marino, D.O. at LasikPlus in Kenwood. “We’ve been doing laser vision correction at LasikPlus since 1995; early on, we were typically seeing younger people as a general trend. As time has passed, we are definitely seeing more of a trend of people in their 40s and 50s, and even 60s.”

Contributing to the increase in popularity among that demographic is an increase in acceptance of the surgery among the general population, according to Dr. Gary Varley, medical director at Cincinnati Eye Institute in Blue Ash.

“Lasik is now a well known, fairly well understood procedure,” he said. “Ten years ago, patients would still say ‘That’s too new’ or ‘I don’t know anything about it.’ ”

And as they get older, patients are more likely to be able to afford the procedure, the average cost of which is about $2,100 per eye, he said. Plus, vision correction can become more and more of a hassle as we age.
“When they get over 40, now they need reading glasses,” Dr. Varley said. “If they have contacts, they have to get reading glasses; if they have glasses, they have to get bifocals.”

Unfortunately, laser surgery won’t mean leaving those reading glasses behind: Although it can correct farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism, Lasik can’t fix presbyopia, the age-related loss of focusing that necessitates them.

Instead, Dr. Marino said patients can get the surgery to correct their eyes for distance and continue to use reading glasses, or they can try monovision correction, which is also becoming more and more popular.
“In one of the eyes, we correct them for distance; in the opposite eye, we leave them a little bit nearsighted, so they can use that eye for reading,” Dr. Marino said. “For individuals wearing monovision contacts, we can mimic that quite well.”

Having the surgery at an older age doesn’t pose additional risks, Dr. Marino said.

“Someone over 40, it’s just as possible for them to get a good outcome as it is for a younger person,” he said. About 75 percent of patients make good surgery candidates, he said.

What factors make someone a good or bad candidate? Dr. Varley lists the following:

• Degree of focusing error: The bigger the abnormality or the thicker the glasses, in general, the harder it is to get your vision as perfect as you want.
• General eye health (must be free of glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and severe dry eye), shape of the cornea and size of pupils.
• The personality of the patient: “If you have a type A personality that (believes) everything is black and white, they may not be as happy with the outcome as someone who’s more easygoing and accepting,” he said.

General eye health can limit on older patients who want surgery, as they’re more likely to develop those diseases, Dr. Varley said.

For all patients, Dr. Varley recommends that they choose a surgeon and a center that makes them feel comfortable, and make sure their surgeon understands their goals.

“You can’t take LASIK back and say that it doesn’t work,” he added.

Lasik surgery seen as good option

By Rajesh Khanna
Special to the Acorn
Recent advances in visioncorrection surgeries have been remarkable. But it can be difficult to see through all the medical jargon to understand what applies to our own eyes.

To get a good grasp, let’s assemble people into three age groups: 18 to 45, 46 to 65, and 66 and older.
In the 18 to 45 age group, Lasik is the top choice. Recent Lasik advances include wave front, astigmatism correction and blade-free Lasik.

FDA approval for laser vision correction starts at age 18. By that age, eyes start stabilizing. It is important to confirm that the eyes are stable.

Since Lasik is much safer than contact lenses, it is a natural choice for athletes and collegebound students.
In wave front technology, the entire treatment is executed with computers and lasers. With oversight by a skilled Lasik surgeon, a beam of light is first sent into the eye. This bounces off the retina and gets grasped and analyzed by the computers in the wave front machine.

Unlike a traditional eye exam at the optometrist, where asking “Is one better or two?” can drive a client nuts, the computerized analysis increases the accuracy. In fact, the level of accuracy with the wave front laser is nearly 100 times more than glasses or contacts.

Incorporating iris registration increases the accuracy of delivery. Here the laser identifies landmarks on the iris, the colored part of the eye, and moves with the eye.
The modern day flap-making devices are more advanced than the freehand blades of previous centuries. Today we have automated thin flap makers and the laser to create consistent uniform flaps.

There have also been different advances in FDA laser machines, such as Visx S4IR and Allegreto, which are the top two.

So today’s laser vision correction surgery is safer, longer lasting and provides better vision, especially at night, without any glare or halos.

LASIK Surgeon in Hawaii on How to Choose the Right Eye Doctor

According to the latest statistics from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), approximately 800,000 refractive surgical procedures were performed in 2010. Dr. Alan Faulkner, a laser vision correction surgeon and eye doctor in Hawaii, says these statistics reflect the popularity of corrective eye surgery and indicate a need for patients to ensure their physician is qualified and experienced in ophthalmologic techniques. Dr. Faulkner discusses how to choose the right surgeon for a procedure such as LASIK surgery in Hawaii.
Honolulu, HI (PRWEB) February 01, 2012
At his Hawaii eye care facility, Dr. Alan Faulkner says refractive surgical procedures have increased significantly in the past few years. The most recent surveys from the American Academy of Ophthalmology report that there were approximately 800,000 refractive surgical procedures performed in 2010, up more than 50,000 from 2009. As refractive and laser vision correction procedures continue to grow more popular, Dr. Faulkner says consulting with the proper doctor is essential to achieving the best results and improving vision. With procedures like LASIK and cataract surgery, he says high quality vision correction requires exact precision from the surgeon and an up-to-date knowledge of the latest technology.
Thanks to recent developments in laser correction technology, Dr. Faulkner says LASIK and refractive eye surgeons are able to reduce the risks and side effects of procedures to a minimal amount. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, LASIK surgery complications now occur in less than 5% of all cases. Dr. Faulkner says that in order to maintain such a high degree of success, surgeons must pursue continued education in techniques and procedures in addition to their normal patient care. He says patients should be sure to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon who is active in the ophthalmologic community and who has a strict attention to patient safety and well-being.
Dr. Faulkner says another important attribute to look for in an eye doctor is dedication and personalized patient care. He recommends taking time to meet a surgeon and his or her staff while researching their credentials before undergoing any procedure. Through individualized and personal outlining of each patient's needs, Dr. Faulkner also says patients and doctors must maintain open communication in order to achieve the right results for each individual.
About Alan R. Faulkner, MD

Reasons To Consider Laser Eye Surgery

laser eye surgeryThose who have long suffered from refractive errors wіll bе glad tо know that therе are revolutionary laser techniques thаt can helр rid thеm оf the hassle of wearing corrective eyewear and benefit from a newfound sense оf freedom. These types of laser eye surgeries havе grown іn popularity in last couple оf years – with thе advancement оf technology and extensive surgeon research in this field – whісh has resulted іn а broader range оf people whо fall into thе suitability bracket.

The mоst common (and successful) forms оf laser eye surgery usеd to treat refractive errors аrе LASIK аnd LASEK (PRK) procedures. Although very similar іn terms of results – wіth mоѕt patients regaining 20/20 or 20/40 (driving standard) vision – the procedures thеmselveѕ аrе slightly different. After undergoing a thоrough screening process, уour surgeon wіll determine your suitability fоr оnе of thе above surgeries. While LASIK іѕ the most common of all laser eye surgeries, candidates that hаvе a cornea that is nоt thick оr toо flat tо withstand the LASIK method сan be deemed suitable for thе LASEK procedure.

The laser eye surgery procedures

The LASEK procedure entails preserving the corneal epithelium – іn this waу іt differs from LASIK surgery as the ophthalmic surgeon does nоt create а corneal flap оr scrape and remove the epithelium. Instead, уоur laser eye surgeon will treat thе area with а diluted alcohol solution whісh loosens thе epithelium. They wіll thеn roll back the loosened tissue аnd work wіth a laser оn the exposed corneal tissue beneath. One thе surgery hаs beеn completed, the surgeon simply rolls back thе epithelium cells smoothly іnto their newly reshaped position. This reshaping process сhаngеѕ аnd channels thе refraction оf light which results іn vastly improved vision.

During LASIK eye surgery, your surgeon wоuld have examined уour cornea tо ensure thаt іt іѕ thick еnоugh to withstand thе treatment whiсh entails а laser оr a computer-controlled instrument creating а vеry thin, circular flap of tissue in thе outer epithelium. Once thіs hаs bеen cut away and moved aside, thе surgeon іѕ provided with а working space іn whiсh he reshapes the cornea to change thе light refraction in the eye.
No matter whо уоu are, laser eye surgery саn make the world оf difference to everyday activities. On top оf the vast improvement in vision, many people who havе undergone this procedure boast of аn improved self-confidence аnd a mighty boost tо thеir self-esteem.

Which refractive errors arе correctable?

Laser eye surgery іs оnе оf thе ideal options whеn it cоmeѕ to correcting thе follоwіng refractive errors: People who have the conditions of hyperopia or long sightedness, myopia, short sightedness, and astigmatism can benefit from the procedure.

Not onlу аrе numerous people benefitting from improved vision, but mаnу stand testimony tо thе incredible difference this procedure сan make tо everyday life. A LASIK or LASEK laser eye surgery procedure means that the patients whо were previously hounded by the financial qualms of glasses or contacts are free of thе hassles and afforded thе freedom tо make theіr form оf corrective eyewear, redundant. Simple tasks like catching a ball, reading thе paper оr admiring a view are made simpler and more enjoyable. Another fantastic feature оf thiѕ partісular form оf laser eye surgery іs the fact thаt patients hardlу experience pain, in fact – the procedure involves littlе to nо discomfort.

Post laser eye surgery treatment

To ensure a speedy recovery and relieve any pоѕsiblе temporary discomfort, patients аre givеn prescribed medicated eye drops. To avoid thе accidental rubbing оf eyes whіle sleeping, patients аre provided wіth a night shield fоr roughly the fіrst week. In ѕomе cases, patients arе fitted with soft contact lenses whіch alѕo provide furthеr protection and aid the healing process.
