The Dangers of Choosing “Low Cost” LASIK Surgery

New York, NY, August 06, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Now that the general public accepts that LASIK vision correction surgery has a very low risk of complications, a number of commercials and print advertisements offer “low cost” LASIK surgery. However, getting a discounted rate on eye surgery often means inexperienced doctors and equipment that is at least 10 years old.

Dr. Ilan Cohen, director of 5th Avenue Eye Center in Manhattan, serves patients throughout New York and New Jersey with his state-of-the-art LASIK and cataract surgical techniques. He hopes to educate people throughout the world about the importance of choosing a qualified doctor for LASIK surgery.

“There are many great doctors offering LASIK for reasonable prices,” Dr. Cohen said. “I serve a small part of the population and want to encourage people living in other areas such as California or Texas to thoroughly check the qualifications of a doctor before signing up for LASIK.”

Ideally, a doctor performing LASIK should offer other services and be a fellowship trained corneal specialist. Modern laser equipment is expensive and involves “click fees” (royalties paid to the excimer laser manufacturer), so surgeons who use older equipment can charge very low treatment prices.

“Older laser equipment might work fine for your eyes, but the risk that it might not fully correct your vision or even damage your eyesight is too high,” Dr. Cohen said. “There is really no ‘cheap’ substitute for modern equipment, an experienced and moral surgeon, and trained staff members.”

5th Avenue Eye Center is a comprehensive vision clinic with branches in Manhattan and Queens, New York as well as New Jersey. Dr. Cohen was fellowship trained in corneal surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. and Catholic Medical Center in Boston, Mass. His state-of-the-art LASIK techniques and ability to correct other surgeons’ mistakes have garnered international media attention on CBS, CNBC, and FOX News. Dr. Cohen teaches LASIK surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

The advent of patient financing programs has made high-quality vision correction technology accessible to almost everyone, notes Dr. Cohen. Many reputable LASIK clinics offer in-house financing or connections to medical loans and credit cards. Some medical lenders can even work with people who have a history of credit problems.

“With so many financing options out there, I encourage people to research their local LASIK clinics and find the most experienced surgeon with the best possible technology,” Dr. Cohen said. “Your eyes are worth paying slightly more money for the very best care.”
