Dr. Thomas Tooma of NVISION Laser Eye Centers, formerly a part of TLC Laser Eye Centers, announced today that NVISION has opened its ninth location in Murrieta.
"NVISION Murrieta is led by two of the most experienced LASIK eye surgeons in Southern California -- Dr. Max Parikh and Dr. Richard Burns," said Dr. Tooma. "NVISION Murrieta is the only facility in the Temecula Valley to offer all-laser LASIK, which is the most advanced treatment in laser vision correction today."
Dr. Parikh is the San Diego Chargers Official Team Ophthalmologist and former medical director at Advanced Ophthalmology Institute. Dr. Parikh knows the importance of precision in LASIK procedures having performed more than 12,000 LASIK surgeries.
Dr. Burns has performed more than 20,000 refractive and cataract surgeries. Prior to joining NVISION, Dr. Burns served as the clinical instructor of ophthalmology for the University of California, San Diego, where he previously completed his residency and served as chief resident.
On September 1, 2010, Medical Director Dr. Thomas Tooma purchased interest in eight TLC Vision Centers to become a separate LASIK brand. The new brand now operates as NVISION Laser Eye Centers and has the same surgeons, staff and locations in La Jolla, Palm Desert, Ontario, Fullerton, Newport Beach, Laguna Hills, Torrance, and Camarillo.
To find out more about the new NVISION Murrieta location, please contact Kate Crosby, Director of Refractive Services, at 951-696-1135, ext. 220. A formal grand opening for the new NVISION Murrieta location is slated for January 29, 2011.

Local clinic offers bladeless eye surgery
By Zach Whitney
MOSCOW - Going under the knife can cause apprehension, especially when it involves your eyes. But a new bladeless technology is helping people see more clearly.
When some hear the words 'LASIK surgery,' visions of blades slicing eyes come to mind. But at Clearview Eye Clinic, a new technology called Intralase is helping patients see: blade free.
"Intralase is particularly special," said Dr. David Leach. "It's a laser that's designed just to make the flap. It helps me as a surgeon to truly customize the flap for the patient."
The procedure works through slight pressure on the eye and tiny air pockets just below the surface create a customized flap that can be folded right back after the LASIK procedure. The entire process often takes less than 30 seconds.
"Any surgical procedure has risks and we understand that of course. But as a surgeon, I want to become more effective with my technology and safer," said Leach. "Two goals for new technology. Intralase fits that bill perfectly. With Intralase there's no moving parts, nothing sharp, cutting the eye, not a laser burning the eye, nothing like that."
Leach said the absence of blades makes the technology 25 times more effective and safer. And that makes it a little more desirable.
"I've had a couple incidents where I've lost my glasses skiing," said LASIK patient Steven Reitz. "Then I'm groping around on the ground looking for my glasses. I just feel disabled without them."
Reitz said he's been considering LASIK surgery for years, and the no blade technology has helped him feel better about getting it.
"I've actually been putting this off for about 10 or 12 years waiting for things to get a little more refined," said Reitz. "So I think we're kind of at that point where I think they've refined it well enough where I feel comfortable with the level of risk."
Leach said the technology allows them to customize the procedure to the patient rather than telling the patient they are not able to have the surgery. A screening is still required, but Leach said a lot more people now have the option of improving their eyesight.
"There are some folks who have been told they're not good candidates for LASIK because they're corneas are too thin. We can often overcome that problem with the Intralase laser, because of its unique ability to make a truly customized flap."
Leach said the future of LASIK is all about speed, and he only sees it getting faster. The recovery is quick too, as some patients head to work the next day.

New laser eye treatment gives patients 'super-vision'
Two-fifths of patients undergoing a new laser eye treatment end up with "super-vision", it was claimed yesterday.
The revolutionary new technique at the Z-LASIK clinic in London boasts a 100pc success rate at correcting short sightedness to 20/20 "normal" levels.
But in 40pc of cases, patients are said to go home with 20/12 "super-vision".
They can read small letters on a vision chart as well from 20ft as most people can from 12.
20/12 is close to the 20/10 physical limit where it is impossible to see better given the number of light sensitive cells in the eye.
At this point, known as "ultimate vision", a person's eyesight is twice as good as "normal".
Research based on 307 patients attending the clinic over the past 12 months showed that 95pc were given vision better than 20/20.
LASIK uses light from a "cool" laser to reshape the front surface of the eye. The newer version of the treatment, Z-LASIK, employs two lasers and computer technology to remove a microscopic layer of corneal tissue in less than 20 seconds.
The treatment costs £1,500 per eye.

“GIFT of SIGHT CONTEST”: Win a Free LASIK with Dr. Gulani
In celebration of receiving national recognition among Top Ophthalmologists in America, Gulani Vision Institute has announced its “Gift of Sight contest” in which it will give the gift of LASIK to the winner of a nationwide video contest starting this week.
We can appreciate the amazing life change that LASIK can offer. We would like to give back to a deserving person from all over the country who can send in a compelling video of one minute duration (This can be simply done even with your cell phone) explaining why they or their loved one deserves Free LASIK with Dr. Gulani.
Dr. Gulani has raised Lasik Laser Vision and Cataract surgery to an ART and using his newly introduced specialty- Corneoplastique(TM), he designs Vision corrective surgery uniquely to each individual eye. Using Laser or Lens based surgeries or even combinations therein, he has achieved visions of 20/15 and 20/10 in numerous patients.
Lasik, Custom Lasik, iLasik, Bladeless Lasik, Lasek, SBK, ASA and PRK are all forms of Laser Vision Surgeries. These surgeries effectively reshape the cornea so nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can be corrected.
Lens based surgeries including Multifocal, progressive lens implants like crystalens, restor, toric, rezoom and technis have raised the bar on cataract surgery by allowing people to see clearly as well as address their presbyopia and thereby see in the distance and read up close without any glasses.
While some nominees may not otherwise be able to afford LASIK, others may have stories of efforts to reach admirable and inspiring goals that would be best achieved with clear, unhampered vision.
To participate in this contest, you shall need to submit a video of One minute duration that portrays and explains why you deserve the Free LASIK surgery. This video needs to be uploaded to our Facebook page.
Details and rules for this contest along with guidelines are posted on Channel 4 website (http://www.news4jax.com/contests/25999102/detail.html) under category “Contest”.
This contest starts this week and shall end on December 16th. The videos will be reviewed by a dedicated panel of judges and the winner will be announced on the 21st of December at 12:30pm during a Live webcast.
We wish you all the very best and look forward to gifting a deserving person a New Vision for the New Year!

Definitions of Doctors and Eye Specialists
- Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who are eye specialists. They must complete 4 years of medical school, a 1-year internship and at least a 3-year residency. They are also qualified as eye surgeons.
- The eye doctor who examines your eyes for visual health is generally an optometrist. They can prescribe contacts and eyeglasses. Optometrists must complete 4 years of post-graduate optometry school and some will advance to residency in specialized eye care.
- An optician is not a doctor but is usually licensed by the state. They fit and sell eyeglasses that meet an optometrists or ophthalmologists prescription. Some train to fit contacts, as well.
Most ophthalmologists seek additional training beyond their Medical Doctorate. It is important to choose a doctor with strong experience using laser systems for corrective surgery. The most common laser choice for LASIK surgeons in the United States is the VISX laser because the laser provides active tracking during the surgery. LASIK surgeons combine that with a custom treatment that matches your eyes unique needs.
The FDA regulates the sale of medical devices used to perform LASIK surgeries and provide a list of FDA-approved lasers upon request. It is good to ask what laser your surgeon uses and how many successful surgeries have been performed using this equipment. Doctors attend a course specific to the particular laser from the manufacturer.
Consult your LASIK surgeon about their qualifications and technology prior to making any commitment. The American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) provides certification and The American Board of Eye Surgeons (ABES) provides procedure-specific certification for eye surgeons. The ABES also offers a peer-reviewed certification for LASIK.
