Historically, the first step of LASIK was performed using a microkeratome, a hand-held medical instrument with an oscillating blade. While LASIK has proven to be a successful and relatively safe procedure, most complications and patient concerns have been associated with the use of the microkeratome.
The IntraLase Laser Technology eliminates the use of the microkeratome. With the IntraLase Laser, the surgeon precisely controls the first step of LASIK using a computer-controlled laser that delivers rapid pulses of light, a quadrillionth of a second each, to a pre-programmed depth and position within the cornea.
Each pulse forms a microscopic bubble. As the IntraLase Laser moves back and forth across the eye, the bubbles are connected to form a corneal flap. Just prior to vision correction, the doctor lifts the flap to reveal a smooth corneal bed, optimized for reshaping.
The IntraLase Laser also creates a distinctive beveled-edge flap that allows for precise repositioning, alignment and seating of the corneal flap after LASIK is completed. More than 95 percent of advanced LASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision or better, and these benefits are seen when the method is used during either standard of custom LASIK procedures.
The IntraLase Laser Technology takes about 20 seconds per eye, with the entire LASIK procedure often completed in both eyes in approximately 30 minutes. Patients see better immediately with recovery typically lasting a few hours.

Wearing glasses or contact lenses can be a nuisance. LASIK is a popular surgery that allows patients to throw out the glasses and restore vision.
The Eye Center of North Florida is using an advanced procedure called Custom Vue Blade-Free LASIK. Dr. Bret Fisher says traditional LASIK surgery uses a metal blade to make a flap that allows the doctor to work underneath to reshape the cornea. Blade-Free LASIK uses a laser. Dr. Fisher says a second laser is used to reshape the cornea to reset the overall focus.
“We combine that with a custom treatment meaning the treatment is tailored for the patient’s eye and not just for the prescription, and that gives us a higher percentage of 20-20 or better vision, better night vision especially,” Dr. Fisher explains.
The procedure takes about 15 minutes and most patients can go back to their normal activities the next day. Dr. Fisher tells News 13 that LASIK is painless. Some patients say the only thing they feel is a little pressure.
The Eye Center of North Florida is honoring local heroes by awarding free LASIK procedures to five people. Nominees must be firefighters, police officers, EMT’s, paramedics, or past and present military members who have served our country in war and are stationed or live here locally. NVISION Laser Eye Centers Opens New Location in Murrieta

Dr. Thomas Tooma of NVISION Laser Eye Centers, formerly a part of TLC Laser Eye Centers, announced today that NVISION has opened its ninth location in Murrieta.
"NVISION Murrieta is led by two of the most experienced LASIK eye surgeons in Southern California -- Dr. Max Parikh and Dr. Richard Burns," said Dr. Tooma. "NVISION Murrieta is the only facility in the Temecula Valley to offer all-laser LASIK, which is the most advanced treatment in laser vision correction today."
Dr. Parikh is the San Diego Chargers Official Team Ophthalmologist and former medical director at Advanced Ophthalmology Institute. Dr. Parikh knows the importance of precision in LASIK procedures having performed more than 12,000 LASIK surgeries.

Local clinic offers bladeless eye surgery

MOSCOW - Going under the knife can cause apprehension, especially when it involves your eyes. But a new bladeless technology is helping people see more clearly.
When some hear the words 'LASIK surgery,' visions of blades slicing eyes come to mind. But at Clearview Eye Clinic, a new technology called Intralase is helping patients see: blade free.
"Intralase is particularly special," said Dr. David Leach. "It's a laser that's designed just to make the flap. It helps me as a surgeon to truly customize the flap for the patient."
The procedure works through slight pressure on the eye and tiny air pockets just below the surface create a customized flap that can be folded right back after the LASIK procedure. The entire process often takes less than 30 seconds.
"Any surgical procedure has risks and we understand that of course. But as a surgeon, I want to become more effective with my technology and safer," said Leach. "Two goals for new technology. Intralase fits that bill perfectly. With Intralase there's no moving parts, nothing sharp, cutting the eye, not a laser burning the eye, nothing like that."
Leach said the absence of blades makes the technology 25 times more effective and safer. And that makes it a little more desirable.
"I've had a couple incidents where I've lost my glasses skiing," said LASIK patient Steven Reitz. "Then I'm groping around on the ground looking for my glasses. I just feel disabled without them."
Reitz said he's been considering LASIK surgery for years, and the no blade technology has helped him feel better about getting it.
"I've actually been putting this off for about 10 or 12 years waiting for things to get a little more refined," said Reitz. "So I think we're kind of at that point where I think they've refined it well enough where I feel comfortable with the level of risk."
Leach said the technology allows them to customize the procedure to the patient rather than telling the patient they are not able to have the surgery. A screening is still required, but Leach said a lot more people now have the option of improving their eyesight.
"There are some folks who have been told they're not good candidates for LASIK because they're corneas are too thin. We can often overcome that problem with the Intralase laser, because of its unique ability to make a truly customized flap."
Leach said the future of LASIK is all about speed, and he only sees it getting faster. The recovery is quick too, as some patients head to work the next day.
